Does credit repair work? An honest answer
Yes, when your report has errors and the company does the work properly. No, when someone promises to erase accurate history. Here is how to tell the difference, from a firm that has done this since 1983.
The short answer
Credit repair works on information that should not be there
Your credit report is supposed to be accurate. When it is not, you have the right to dispute the error, and the bureau has to investigate. Real credit repair is that process done thoroughly: reading all three reports line by line, disputing everything that is inaccurate, outdated, incomplete or unverifiable, and following up until each item is resolved.
It does not make accurate, timely information disappear. Late payments you really made and debts you really owe can stay on your report, usually for up to seven years. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
What it can and cannot do
Realistic expectations
Credit repair can
- Correct errors in personal information and account details
- Challenge duplicate collections and accounts that are not yours
- Remove negative items that are past their reporting period
- Dispute items a creditor cannot verify
- Pair with debt management to lower balances and build positive history
Credit repair cannot
- Erase accurate, timely negative information
- Promise a specific score or a specific deletion
- Give you a “new” credit identity (that is illegal)
- Work overnight: bureaus need time to investigate
- Replace good habits going forward
Timeline
How long does credit repair take?
It depends on how many items need attention and how each bureau responds. A bureau generally has 30 days to investigate a dispute, and some items take more than one round. Many of our clients work with us for several months; two reviews on our site mention five and six months.
The timeline you can control is the start. If you are planning a home or car purchase, begin months ahead, not the week before the application. Our page on credit help for home buyers walks through that plan.
Cost
How much does credit repair cost?
Honest pricing depends on the condition of your report and how much work it needs, which is why it should be quoted after someone has actually read your report. At The Manning Group the first step, a free credit report analysis, costs you only the fee the credit agencies charge for the report. After that you get a written explanation of the services and their cost before you agree to anything.
Weigh any price against what bad credit already costs you: a few points on a mortgage rate or a car loan can add up to far more than the work to fix your report.
Is credit repair legit?
How to spot a real company, and a scam
Credit repair is a legitimate service and a regulated one. Federal law gives you specific protections when you hire a credit repair company. These are the signs to look for:
Signs of a legitimate company
- A written contract that explains the services, the total cost and how long it will take
- Your right to cancel within three business days, explained in writing
- No promises of a specific score or of removing accurate information
- An honest statement that you can dispute errors yourself, for free
- A real office, real people and a track record you can check
Red flags
- “We can remove all negative items, guaranteed”
- Telling you not to contact the bureaus yourself
- Advising you to dispute information you know is accurate
- Offering a new Social Security or employer identification number to “start fresh”
- Pressure to sign today, or no written contract at all
The Federal Trade Commission publishes plain-language guidance on credit repair scams at ftc.gov.
Doing it yourself
Can you repair your own credit?
Yes. You can request your reports and dispute errors directly with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion at no cost, and for a single, simple error that is often all it takes.
People hire us when the problem is bigger than one line: several errors across three bureaus, a mixed file, collections reported twice, identity theft, or a debt load that needs a plan as much as the report does. Thoroughness and persistence are what we bring, along with consumer credit counseling so the results last.
